Common Terms Defined

A shared vocabulary is essential for clear communication during the integration process.

Double the Donation

The Double the Donation platform provides nonprofits and educational institutions with tools to identify donors eligible for workplace giving programs like matching gifts, corporate volunteer incentive programs, and more. With an estimated $4 - $7 billion in matching funds going unclaimed per year, organizations can fuel their growth by empowering supporter participation in workplace giving programs while gaining actionable insights along the way.

Double the Donation API Keys

Mutual client users are provisioned with two types of API keys within their Double the Donation account:

  • Public Key: Connects the donation page and plugin to the client’s Double the Donation account. This key is safe to share in front-end code and embed scripts, as it is primarily used to load the matching gift search tool on giving pages.
  • Private Key: Authenticates the nonprofit organization for secure API calls and platform integrations. This key is used for backend communication between servers and must remain confidential; it should never be shared publicly or embedded in client-side code.

Double the Donation Matching

Double the Donation Matching is designed to help nonprofit organizations identify match-eligible donors, promote matching gifts, and automate the follow-up process so more matches are submitted and received. An integration with Double the Donation Matching allows organizations to add Double the Donation’s tools directly to their giving experience, connecting donors to the largest database of corporate matching programs and providing them with actionable next steps. Double the Donation usage results in an average of 20% to 50% matching gift growth year over year.

Double the Donation Volunteering

Organizations can now maximize volunteer PTO and corporate grants by integrating Double the Donation Volunteering with their existing Volunteer Management Systems (VMS). This integration, combined with automated messaging and industry-leading search capabilities, removes the friction from identifying and securing high-value corporate volunteer benefits.

Integration

A successful integration allows mutual client users to enable Double the Donation functionality natively within your platform’s UI without custom coding and ensures secure, reliable data transfer between platforms. The process integrates two tools into the donation form:

  • Search Tool: This autocomplete field embeds directly into your donation form, querying Double the Donation’s database of 24,000+ companies in real time. As donors type, the tool enables them to identify their employer and view matching gift instructions once their transaction is complete.
  • Confirmation Page Plugin: This widget is displayed on the confirmation or thank you page following a donation and acts as the primary “action center” for donors to initiate their matching gift request. For donors who identified their employer via the Search Tool, the plugin provides company-specific forms, guidelines, and direct links to corporate submission portals. For donors who skipped the initial search, the plugin displays a search bar to capture employer information and provide actionable next steps before the donor leaves the site.

Client Organization/Client

The nonprofit organization, or an internal administrative user of that organization, who licenses your platform and wishes to activate the Double the Donation integration.

Donor

The end-user or supporter contributing financially, or via volunteer hours, to the client organization through your platform’s front-end interface. We’ve found that 84% of donors say they are more likely to donate if a match is offered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do you differentiate between “Client” and “Donor” instead of just using “User”?

The integration touches two entirely different experiences. We use “Client” to refer to the organizational administrators configuring the back-end integration in your software, and “Donor” to refer to the everyday supporters interacting with the front-end workplace giving search tools. Distinguishing between these terms prevents technical and operational confusion.

Q: I’m completing the technical integration, and I’m stumped. How do I get unstuck?

First, consult the troubleshooting scenarios documented in the knowledge base. If your issue persists, please email your dedicated Partnership representative or  partners@doublethedonation.com with the following format to ensure rapid routing:

Subject Line: “[Your Platform Name] Technical Integration Issue”

  • The step in the documentation you’re stuck on
  • A detailed description of the problem and the troubleshooting steps you’ve taken so far
  • Applicable screenshots and links

You should expect a response within 2 business days, though our team generally resolves inquiries much sooner.

Q: How long does the technical integration typically take?

Integrating Double the Donation into a donation form or CRM can usually be completed within a single two-week sprint, covering everything from initial scoping and technical build-out to testing and final deployment.

Q: How do we test the integration before pushing it to production?

To test your integration before moving to production, please follow the detailed steps outlined in our testing documentation.

Additionally, please ensure you contact the Double the Donation Partnerships team directly to coordinate your testing phase and confirm that your integration meets all necessary requirements for a live launch.
